Lynn Ciity Massachussetts by 1850 was known as the  "Shoe City"
Workers produced 4,478,700 pairs of shoes in that year. Shoes had been a craft trade before the 50's but as  the Civil war  era approuched more and more shoes were being produced by machines in factories.

Prior to 1850 shoes were not designed for both the left and right foot.  Each shoe was the same.

Lyman Blake an American inventor who invented a sewing machine for sewing the soles of shoes to the uppers. In 1858, he received a patent for his special sewing machine.
